Here are six insights:

1. Between 2012 and 2015, the VA added more than 39,000 jobs, but only 3,951 of those were medical officer positions.

2. The VA instead spent much of its funding on lawyers and public affairs officials, the report found.

3. A great deal of VA money went toward salaries and bonuses, most of which were for non-medical employees.

4. The report found the VA allotted $454 million in lawyer salaries and bonuses; the department funneled $99 million in public relation official salaries and bonuses.

5. About 500,000 veterans are still awaiting care.

6. The report’s findings led some to argue that the VA isn’t struggling with resources, but rather with its culture.
