5 steps toward data transparency

What can healthcare organizations do to improve data transparency? Here are five steps to further a data transparency agenda, from Castlight Health's senior director Cathie Markow, BSN, MBA.

1. Understand your data. Know which data you're collecting, how you're collecting it, and how it's comparable to similar data from regional competitors.

2. Consider new metrics. New metrics for patient care or care quality can be helpful marketing, as well as benchmarking, tools for your organization.

3. Build on your strengths. Understand where your organization excels, and consider building core business lines on those strengths.

4. Connect with national registries. Quality data is much more useful when you can benchmark with national registries, as well as with regional competitors.

5. Explore ways to better communicate your data to the public. If you help your customers understand what your data means, and you can use the data for public education.
