Here are five notes:
1. The news follows President Trump’s executive order on the ACA. The order aims to reduce the ACA’s executive burden through various provisions.
2. Rep. Chris Collins, (R-N.Y.), told Politico the administration’s move to halt the ads gives a clear signal that President Trump is taking charge. He said, “President Trump is signaling he’s the new sheriff. He’s been elected with a mandate. He’s not going to tolerate his employees contradicting and undermining his mandate to get this country going in another direction.”
3. The administration is also stopping emails that encourage Americans who have started the sign-up process to finish. The emails have proved successful in the past to get those people to follow through with obtaining coverage.
4. Americans have until Jan. 31, 2017, to purchase ACA coverage. Politico stated the final days are a pivotal time for enrollment. An HHS spokesperson told Politico, “The federal government has spent more than $60 million promoting the open enrollment period. HHS has pulled back roughly $5 million of the final placement in an effort to look for efficiencies, where they exist.”
5. An Obama administration spokesperson previously told Politico the government has already paid for the ads.
