Payers get a win — 3 insights on the Obama administration’s latest requirement on consumers

On Feb. 24, the Obama administration reported the government will require customers seeking coverage through the Affordable Care Act to prove their eligibility for “special enrollment periods,” according to The Hill.

Here are three insights.

1. Payers have been seeking a verification process for consumers who sign up for coverage after the national marketplace deadline.

2. America’s Health Insurance Plans ‘tentatively’ approved the policy, claiming the police will make sure qualified enrollees have access to coverage during transitions while ultimately reducing abuse and misuse of special enrollment periods.

3. Earlier this week, AHIP released a report critiquing the special enrollment period, arguing consumers often waited until they became sick to sign up for insurance.
