Idaho's Pend Oreille Surgery Center Negotiates New Contracts After Refusing Unprofitable Offers From Payors

Pend Oreille Surgery Center in Ponderay, Idaho, has negotiated newly profitable contracts after refusing several offers from Blue Cross of Idaho and Regence Blue Shield and canceling its existing contracts with the insurers, according to a Bonner County Daily Bee report.

Earlier in 2011, the ASC’s leadership began reviewing existing insurance contracts and discovered that many payments for procedures were too low. Some procedures were reimbursed below the cost of providing services.

According to Lucas Anderson, POSC operations manager, the decision to cancel the Blue Cross contracts was not easy. The surgery center leadership learned that new contracts proposed even lower payments on some of the center’s most popular procedures.

The business office staff at Pend Oreille has worked hard to negotiate profitable contracts with Blue Cross of Idaho and Regence Blue Shield. Negotiations are currently ongoing with Idaho Physicians' Network, and the ASC expects to finalize a contract soon.
