CMS Extends Medicare E-Prescribing Exemption Application Deadline

Physicians unable to meet the original deadline to apply for Medicare Electronic Prescribing hardship exemption, including many anesthesiologists, will now have until Jan. 31, 2013, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

The 1.5 percent Medicare payment penalty for failure to using eRx begins in 2013.

Physicians qualify to apply for an exemption for the following reasons:
•    If you are unable to e-prescribe because of local, state or federal law
•    If you wrote fewer than 100 prescriptions from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2012
•    If you practice in an area without sufficient high-speed Internet access
•    If you practice in an area without enough pharmacies to do e-prescribing

For more information about eRx and exemptions, visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' website.
