Here are several technologies changing the landscape:
Social media. Physicians are leveraging social media platforms to connect with each other, asking for second opinions on complicated cases. Startup Figure 1 bears resemblance to Instagram, offering a platform for physicians to submit cases that are throwing them for a loop (with patients’ consent). About 1.5 million users are currently using the platform.
Smart devices. Edwards Lifesciences’ CEO Mike Mussallem told Business Insider closed-loop systems will gain a lot more traction in the near future. Closed-loop systems take readings and deliver treatments without human involvement.
Sequencing technology. Sequencing the humane genome only sets you back $1,000 today, a far cry from the $2.7 billion it took back in 2003. Stronger sequencing platforms enable more people to grab a hold of this valuable data.
