Six insights:

1. Hamden Surgery Center closed years ago when Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hospital acquired the New Haven-based Hospital of Saint Raphael.

2. With Dan Coraluzzi serving as the facility’s CEO, the 16,000-square-foot Northeast Alliance Surgery Center has hired a 20-person support staff. Surgeons at the center will specialize in orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, ophthalmology and pain management.

3. Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates holds a minority ownership stake in the center. The company owns and operates six other ASCs in Connecticut, but this is its first location in New Haven County.

4. Spine surgeon James Yue, MD, is one of the center’s founders. He is also a partner in Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists.

5. The project was funded through $400,000 in state grants and loans, as well as through financing and help from referring physicians.

6. Northeast Alliance Surgery Center plans to start accepting patients in April.
