Albany Medical Center's proposed ASC gets another shot after committee rejection — 4 notes

Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center still has a chance to open an ASC in Niskayuna, N.Y., although a state committee rejected the proposal, Albany Business Review reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The Committee on Establishment and Project Review rejected the proposed ASC Nov. 29. The state Public Health and Health Planning Council will make the next ruling Dec. 13. If approved, the request will go before the state commissioner of health for a final decision.

2. The gastroenterology-focused ASC would have four procedure rooms and one operating room. It would be located on the third floor of a building that recently sold for $10 million and houses a cardiology group, urgent care and specialty physician practices.

3. The ASC would perform an estimated 3,638 procedures its first year, generating about $3.4 million in revenue and $552,000 in profit.

4. Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine and Saratoga Schenectady Gastroenterology Associates oppose the new ASC. They argue there's no community need for the facility and it would divert patients from their organizations, cutting into revenue.
