Boulder-based The University of Colorado’s Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine added Valeria Canto-Soler, PhD, to conduct research on developing cell-based treatments for ophthalmological disorders.

Here’s what you should know:

1. In addition, Dr. Canto-Soler was named the director of University of Colorado’s CellSite, the departments ocular stem cell and regeneration research program.

2. She earned her PhD from Buenos Aires, Argentina-based Austral University School of Medicine.

3. After earning her PhD, Dr. Canto-Soler served as a fellow at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University.

4. In 2014, Dr. Canto-Soler and a team of researchers developed a miniature human retina in a petri dish with human stem cells. The retina could sense light with functional photoreceptor cells. She believes the research could help develop personalized medicine and drug treatments.
