Here are five key notes:
1. Dr. Nelson worked as a family practitioner until 1955. That year, he undertook an anesthesiology residency at Pittsburgh-based Allegheny General Hospital.
2. Two years later, he started working at St. Mary’s Hospital of Clarksburg (W.Va.), currently known as United Hospital Center. Dr. Nelson was the first anesthesiologist at St. Mary’s Hospital of Clarksburg at that time.
3. Dr. Nelson was the driving force behind UHC opening several ASCs in Clarksburg.
4. His other career accomplishments include establishing the first intensive care unit, PACU and coronary care unit at St. Mary’s. In 1960, he launched St. Mary’s first nurse anesthesia program.
5. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
