Researchers reviewed 12 randomized controlled trials from 1946 to 2016 featuring 3,209 participants. They identified the trials from the Embase and Medline databases.

Wound protectors lowered surgical site infection development significantly. Researchers found evidence that dual-ring wound protectors lowered SSI incidence rate even further than the single-ring group.

Researchers concluded, “Wound protector use is associated with decreased odds of developing SSI in patients undergoing lower gastrointestinal surgery. There was a subgroup effect when comparing dual-ring to single-ring devices.”
