Where endoscopy stands today

Here are five recent developments on endoscopies — some of which are changing gastroenterology.

Anesthesia-less endoscopies

  • Orlando (Fla.) Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children added the EvoEndo single-use endoscopy system to perform anesthesia-free endoscopies for pediatric patients over the age of 5. The hospital is one of 25 hospitals in the country that offer the procedure.
  • Pediatric gastroenterologist Matthew Ryan, MD, became the first physician to complete more than 100 transnasal endoscopies of the upper GI tract using EvoEndo’s single-use endoscopy system.

  • The District of Columbia State Health Planning and Development Agency received a certificate of need application for an ASC from the District Endoscopy Center.
  • A Midland, Mich.-based building housing the Great Lakes Bay Surgery & Endoscopy Center sold for $9.8 million.

A new first 

  • The endoscopy team at UC Davis Health in Sacramento completed the world’s first endoscopic, ultrasound-guided core biopsy of a pancreatic tumor with a new device.
