West Penn Allegheny Health System Performs Minimally Invasive Achalasia Treatment

At the West Penn Allegheny Health System Institute for the Treatment of Esophageal and Thoracic Disease, a team of physicians performed a per-oral endoscopic myotomy procedure, a minimally invasive treatment for achalasia.

The team of physicians included Abhijit Kulkarni, MD, gastroenterology lab director at Allegheny (Pa.) General Hospital; Blair Jobe, MD, director of the WPAHS Institute for Esophageal and Thoracic Disease; Lana Schumacher, MD, co-director of the institute; Shyam Thakkar, MD, gastroenterologist; and Toshitaka Hoppo, MD, general surgeon.
