Study: Vegetarian Diet Helps Ward Off Diverticular Disease

New research has found vegetarians are one-third less likely than meat-eaters to develop diverticular disease, according to a report in the British Medical Journal.

Diverticular disease, affecting the large bowel or colon, is thought to be caused by inadequate consumption of fiber.

 

About 10 percent of U.S. adults older than 40 and about half of U.S. adults older than 60 have diverticulosis.
