Small bowel resection inpatient costs total $28.5k & 7 more statistics

Boston-based Brigham & Women’s Hospital researchers found seven types of emergency general surgeries accounted for 80.2 percent of inpatient costs in the United States, according to Medscape Multispecialty.

In their analysis, researchers studied partial colectomy, small bowel resection, cholecystectomy, operative management of peptic ulcer disease, lysis of peritoneal adhesions, appendectomy and laparotomy.

Here are seven statistics on inpatient costs:

•    Small bowel resection: $28,450.72
•    Partial colectomy: $27,558.77
•    Operative management of peptic ulcer disease: $27,095.60
•    Laparotomy: $21,962.55
•    Lysis of peritoneal adhesions: $17,387.27
•    Cholecystectomy: $10,579.35
•    Appendectomy: $9,664.30
