Recent PPI controversy unwarranted, but long-term use should still be monitored — 4 insights

A study published in Current Opinions Gastroenterology examined the recent research on adverse effects attributed to proton pump inhibitors, Medscape reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Several studies have attributed long-term PPI use to chronic kidney disease, cognitive decline, myocardial infarction, stroke, bone fracture and even death.

2. Researchers have now found the evidence underlying those studies was very low quality, meaning the studies cannot determine cause and effect.

3. Researchers debunked the claims of adverse effects because the unintended consequences of the study have impacted PPI prescription rates.

4. Researchers did note long-term PPI use should be for the lowest effective dose and periodically reassessed.
