GI physician to know: Dr. Scott Plevy of University of North Carolina School of Medicine

Scott E. Plevy, MD, is an associate professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. He was co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of Pittsburgh and has served as basic science section editor for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He also works with Janssen Research & Development on immunology initiatives.

Dr. Plevy has a professional interest in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. His research interests include studying the interactions between the immune system and the environment lead to the initiation and perpetuation of inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease. He is also interested in studying the anti-inflammatory effects of a component of cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide, on the course of IBD.

Dr. Plevy has contributed to more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Immunology, Current Opinion in Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology. Dr. Plevy earned his medical degree at Columbia University in New York.
