Gastroenterologist to know: Dr. John Kuemmerle of Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center

John F. Kuemmerle, MD, is a gastroenterologist and chair for the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. He previously served as the division of gastroenterology’s medical director of the GI clinic and fellowship program director as well as associate chair of gastroenterology for research and vice chair of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.

Dr. Kuemmerle’s clinical and research interests focus on inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and molecular mechanisms mediating the development of fibrosis, with the long-term goal of developing translational interventions for fibrosis. He has authored over 50 scientific reports, 12 book chapters/reviews and 80 abstracts. He is the editor of the online journals Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Kuemmerle earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and completed his residency and fellowship at VCU Medical Center.
