End of Year Busiest Time for Weight-Loss Surgery

The end of December is the busiest time for many elective procedures, including weight loss surgeries such as gastric bypass, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The end of the year is a popular time for bariatric procedures because patients might have met their insurance deductibles and can get insurance to cover more of the often expensive procedures. Michael H. Wood, MD, medical director of the bariatric surgery program at Detroit Medical Center's Harper University Hospital, told the Wall Street Journal that he expects to see an increase of 10 percent during the month of December.
