The new guidelines propose an algorithm for testing for C. difficile infections and address best practices around fecal microbiota transplantation in recurrent and severe cases, according to a May 19 news release.
“FMT has emerged as an effective treatment, but questions remain about best methods of delivery, optimal donor screening, and long-term safety of the procedure,” the guideline authors noted.
The guideline also recommends against probiotics as a primary prevention method for C. difficile infections. It reviews evidence for management approaches in patients who are pregnant, lactating, immunocompromised or who have inflammatory bowel disease.
