The University of Texas Medical Branch has established the Sealy Heart and Vascular Institute and launched a new department of cardiovascular medicine.
The Sealy Heart and Vascular Institute, located on the UTMB Galveston Campus, will expand access to cardiac services, research and education, according to an Aug. 20 news release from UTMB.
The institute will offer advanced services including interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure and heart transplantation, arrhythmia management, advanced cardiovascular imaging and rehabilitation programs.
Hani Jneid, MD, an interventional cardiologist, was named inaugural chair of the new cardiovascular medicine department, director of the Sealy Heart and Vascular Institute and vice president of cardiovascular operations.
Under Dr. Jneid’s leadership, UTMB has grown its general cardiovascular medicine fellowship programs to 10 fellows each year.
The total investment into the heart institute totaled $45 million, which includes a $30 million from the Sealy & Smith Foundation to cover early setup and operating costs, the release said.
