Physician autonomy’s place in this ASC specialty

Autonomy is a chief concern for physicians in 2025, as an increase in the corporatization of physicians has diminished their sense of independence within their practice.

This is one of the draws of working at an ASC for many physicians, as the ASC industry remains largely fragmented and independent in 2025.

But for some, physician autonomy has a meaning that goes beyond practice independence. Amanda Ryan, DO, CEO and owner of Advanced ASC of Carlsbad, N.M., recently joined Becker’s to discuss what she believes physician autonomy means in the context of cardiovascular ASCs.

Editor’s note: This response has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

Dr. Amanda Ryan: The cardiovascular space for ASCs is really wide open. I think [there is] the chance for physician autonomy — and to me, it doesn’t mean staunch independence [or] ‘I answer to no one,’ because I think that’s a naive thought. We all are answering to one another and having accountability in our healthcare system. But I think finding people to partner with that maybe are more in line with our vision and mission is really what we’re looking for. As we look to expand our services, we look to partner with other physicians who are like minded in their approach.
