Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research (DOR) and partners have received a $5 million grant from the American Heart Association to study how artificial intelligence can improve cardiovascular disease screening and treatment.

Led by David Ouyang, MD, the multicenter clinical trial will explore the use of AI to analyze heart ultrasounds — which often include views of the liver and kidneys — to enhance cardiac care and detect early signs of kidney and liver disease. The goal is to help cardiologists deliver more comprehensive care and prompt referrals to other specialists when necessary, according to a July 29 release from the system.

Four sites will participate: Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Stanford (Calif.) Health Center, Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute and Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham.
