Boston Children’s Hospital has created the Congenital Heart Artificial Intelligence (CHAI) Lab to help address gaps in diagnosing congenital heart conditions in low- and middle-income countries, where advanced tools are often scarce, according to an Aug. 12 report from the system.

Led by cardiology fellow Joshua Mayourian, MD, PhD, and cardiologist John Triedman, MD, the lab develops AI-powered electrocardiogram models that can detect heart defects using a low-cost, widely available test. The technology has outperformed commercial software in spotting certain high-risk conditions and can identify subtle signs of poor heart function invisible to many specialists, according to the report.

The CHAI Lab aims to test its tools on diverse populations, collaborate with heart centers worldwide and use the hospital’s decades’ worth of patient data to improve early detection and care for children with congenital heart disease.
