Cumberland Healthcare receives $39M to upgrade facilities, adopt outpatient focus

The U.S. Department of Agriculture granted Cumberland (Wis.) Healthcare $39 million in loans to construct a new facility with an outpatient focus, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The hospital's existing 25-bed facility opened in 1956. 2. The new 96,000-square-foot facility is expected to improve patient flow, improve surgical and clinic services and increase outpatient services.

3. Cumberland is contributing $1.7 million to offset remaining costs.

4. The new facility is expected to be operational in 2020.

5. Outpatient care is growing at Cumberland Healthcare. The hospital had 11,168 outpatient visits in 2016 and 12,844 in 2017.

6. Wisconsin Office of Rural Health Rural Hospitals and Clinics Program Manager Kathryn Miller said, "Hospitals aren’t seeing as many inpatient folks coming in and having long-term stays. There’s a lot more outpatient, so outpatient surgeries, outpatient clinics, that type of care. That’s the same pattern in urban and rural as well."
