Community Health Systems to Purchase Pennsylvania's Memorial Hospital, Surgical Center of York

Subsidiaries of Nashville-based Community Health Systems plan to purchase Memorial Hospital, the Surgical Center of York and other associated facilities in York, Pa., according to a hospital press release.

According to the report, Memorial has decided to partner with CMS as economic conditions make it difficult for a stand-alone hospital to survive. Sally Dixon, Memorial's president and CEO, said the health system shares the hospital's values and has a "proven track record of successfully deploying capital, increasing services and supporting community hospitals in their efforts to provide patients with high quality care."

The agreement between Memorial and CHS includes a financial commitment to build a replacement medical hospital in West Manchester Township. Planning for the new campus will begin after the sale is closed, and construction is expected to begin within 30 months.
