Trump names Dr. David Shulkin as pick to lead VA — 4 things to know

During a news conference in New York City on Jan. 10, 2017, President-elect Donald Trump said he selected David Shulkin, MD, as his pick for VA secretary, according to The Washington Post.

Here are four things to know:

1. Regarding his choice, Trump said, “His sole mandate will be to serve our veterans and restore the level of care we owe to our brave men and women in the military. Sadly our great veterans have not gotten the level of care they deserve, but Dr. Shulkin has the experience and the vision to ensure we will meet the health-care needs of every veteran.”

2. Dr. Shulkin is the VA undersecretary for the Obama administration, with his position unanimously confirmed in June 2015.

3. An internist, Dr. Shulkin led the VA for the last 18 months and worked to improve veteran access to medical appointments.

4. Dr. Shulkin underwent his residency and fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center.
