Trump puts mounting pressure on Republicans; Says time for ACA repeal is now

On Jan. 10, 2017, President-elect Donald Trump told Congress there is no time to waste on an ACA repeal, according to the New York Times.

Here are six highlights:

1. The NYT reports Mr. Trump's sense of urgency puts pressure on Republicans to repeal a health law that took the Obama administration almost two years to pass. In a phone interview with the NYT, Mr. Trump said legislators "have to get to business. Obamacare has been a catastrophic event."

2. The president-elect has been vague concerning the repeal's possible timeline, telling the NYT it could come "probably some time next week" and a replacement would follow suit "very quickly or simultaneously, very shortly thereafter."

3. This week, Republicans are aiming for the Senate and House to cast their vote to approve parliamentary language that protects repeal legislation from a filibuster in the Senate.

4. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.) said Republican leaders are making headway on an ACA alternative and "it is our goal to bring it all together concurrently."

5. However, achieving this goal in Mr. Trump's quick time frame may be quite difficult as Republicans have yet to unite around a single alternative.

6. Democrats continue to support President Barack Obama's health law, with HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell giving a speech this week questioning Republicans' ability to provide a viable alternative. She said, "As for silver bullets, they don't exist. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is."
