Physician assistants in California, the state where PAs have the highest average annual salary, earn $68,100 more than PAs in Arkansas, the state where the profession has the lowest annual salary.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated salary information for physician assistants to reflect 2024 information on April 2. 

Across the U.S., physician assistants have an average annual wage of $136,900.

Here are the top five highest and lowest-paying states for physician assistants:

Top five:

  1. California: $161,980
  2. Washington: $156,060
  3. Oregon: $152,160
  4. New York: $151,280
  5. New Jersey: $149,160

Bottom five:

  1. Arkansas: $93,880
  2. Mississippi: $98,270
  3. Alabama: $105,970
  4. Georgia: $108,270
  5. Kentucky: $110,150
