• Are physicians utilizing technology to enhance patient care?
• Can patients access care during non-business hours?
• How often do physicians discuss preventive health with their patients?
Nielsen Strategic Health Perspectives conducted the 30,000-patient and 600-physician survey.
Here are five thoughts:
1. The survey found physicians falling short in all three question areas.
2. Of the physicians surveyed, 49 percent reported the ability to share information with other physicians. Only 30 percent of physicians have a system for patients to send secure emails.
3. Fifty-eight percent of surveyed physicians reported they allow patients to call them at any time. Of patients surveyed, 2 percent said they can talk with their physicians via video consultations.
4. Although 89 percent of physicians said they discuss preventive health with their patients, only 14 percent of patients reported they had such discussions.
5. Physicians may want to consider enhancing communication to ensure their patients are on the same page. Additionally, the industry should enhance technology and structure to adapt to the changing healthcare environment.
