Risky Business: The costs of sharing medical records with patients — 6 notes

With the latest technological innovations, physicians are able to electronically share medical records with patients. Tony Perez, a cyber security expert and the founder and CEO of NetLok, understands patient demand for access to medical records, but cautions healthcare professionals that patients are not trained to read the data, leading to misinterpretation.

Here are six notes:

1. Mr. Perez explains patients will utilize the Internet to interpret data on their medical records, which may be problematic due to the general information provided on the Internet.

2. Consumers encounter many products on the Internet claiming to cure their medical condition. The information on the products may not have any conclusive evidence about how the product would amend the condition without creating any future problems or side affects.

3. Security issues also present challenges in medical issues and physicians therefore need to meet HIPAA compliance. Ignorance of the HIPAA compliance may result in hefty fines as well as lawsuits.

4. Several physicians purchase medical record system programs on a price basis rather than competence, resulting in opportunities for cyber criminals to gain access to patient records.

5. In addition to being HIPAA compliant, Mr. Perez suggests a change in password protection. Rather than using passwords, NetLok will use photos and pictures, requiring hackers to make a tremendous effort to break into a system.

6. Physicians must also not appear vulnerable to hackers because hackers will patiently wait for healthcare professionals to make a mistake before hacking into systems.
