Boston-based Harvard Medical School researchers found telemedicine use among Medicare beneficiaries has increased, according to Science Daily.

JAMA published the study's results.

Here are five observations:

1. Of Medicare beneficiaries, disabled beneficiaries with medical illness were the most likely to have a telemedicine visit.

2. From 2004 to 2013, the number of telemedicine visits Medicare beneficiaries received increased 28 percent.

3. In 2013, there were 107,000 total telemedicine visits for Medicare beneficiaries.

4. More than 40,000 rural Medicare beneficiaries received one telemedicine visit in 2013.

5. Despite the increase, less than 1 percent of total rural Medicare beneficiaries received a telemedicine visit in 2013.
