Researchers concluded that CAC has real benefits, especially with ICD-10 on the horizon, and may improve coder productivity and accuracy. A positive impact can be seen within days of implementing CAC software, and the average productivity improvement is 20 to 40 percent, according to the report.

Other benefits found included reducing backlogs and easing coder shortages. CAC will help coders scan documents, highlight relevant information and pick codes. However, it will never replace the coder as the decision-maker and code approver.
