Here are five points:
1. The Healthy Indiana Program, an alternative Medicaid program, provides benefits and no copays.
2. Although some were concerned about the program alienating consumers with no incomes, Indiana found about 70 percent of participants paid for the coverage after the first year of the three-year testing period of the program.
3. Some of the plan’s participants are receiving financial help to remain in the program, with 52 nonprofits helping 193 participants.
4. Other consumers receive help from family members or friends to pay even the $1 monthly fee.
5. The program will be evaluated for three years to see if the monthly contributions decrease unnecessary care.
