HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell eases insurers’ fears about ACA marketplace — 5 things to know

At an insurers’ summit on June 9, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylva Mathews Burwell placated health insurers worries about the Affordable Care Act’s fate in the marketplace, according to The Hill.

Here are five things to know:

1. Insurers have requested sharp premium hikes as high as 60 percent this summer in several states.

2. United HealthCare, one of the nation’s largest insurers, plans to exit the all ACA exchanges in 2017.

3. Andy Slavitt, acting administrator of CMS, encouraged insurers to look at the bigger picture when considering the marketplaces’ success.

4. America’s Health Insurance Plans has consistently argued the Obama administration owes payers money from ACA risk corridor programs, which the administration created to help payers in the marketplace despite healthcare’s transient nature.

5. Currently, several insurance companies, like Blue Cross Blue Shieldof North Carolina, are now taking legal action to reclaim the funds.
