Here’s what you should know.

1. Mr. Azar is hoping to address value-based care through four main areas:

  • Giving consumers control over their health information
  • Encouraging transparency among providers and payers
  • Using experimental value and quality models
  • Removing burdens to value-based implementation

2. He will also strive to implement a free market system. He believes such a marketplace would be disruptive to existing market players.

3. Mr. Azar criticized the current system, singling out the subpar performance of accountable care organizations. He said ACOs have achieved “lackluster” cost savings.

4. “Simply put, I don’t intend to spend the next several years tinkering with how to build the very best joint-replacement bundle — we want to look at bold measures that will fundamentally reorient how Medicare and Medicaid pay for care and create a true competitive playing field where value is rewarded handsomely” said Mr. Azar.
