Everyone working in healthcare, not just coders, will need to be prepared for ICD-10, according to a recent article in the Journal of AHIMA.
Specifically, ICD-10 will impact people who work with billing, coding, finance contracts or research. Registration and pre-authorization staff will also be impacted when the code set goes into effect Oct. 1, 2014.
AHIMA has a new training program that will take place in the third and fourth quarters and is specifically designed for non-coders. However, managers should be looking now at how to educate themselves and their departments on the possible impact of ICD-10.
Experts in the report suggest introducing the code set to non-coders through general sessions at already scheduled meetings, rather than long training sessions.
