This figure is up from around 8 percent in 2010. Online payment methods can reduce provider costs with decreased spending on mailed statements and follow-up activities to collect payments, according to the report.

Around 75 percent of survey respondents said the patient responsibility increased in 2012, with 30 percent citing a significant increase. Online payments could make a big difference if more patients decide to adapt those methods, as in 2012 81 percent of providers said it took more than a month to collect patient payments, according to the report.
