Here’s what you should know:
1. Mr. Alexander is the chairman of the Senate healthcare committee, a bipartisan Congressional committee. Mr. Alexander said he’d meet with several senators to come up with a proposal that is likely to pass. Mr. Alexander wants to introduce the proposal to Senate leadership within 10 days.
2. At a recent committee meeting with state governors, the governors pressured the senators on healthcare. CNN reports that they said, “Congress and President Donald Trump had better get their acts together to strengthen Obamacare and stabilize the individual market.”
3. The most pressing issue left unaddressed is the status of government subsidies to payers. The government offsets some of the costs payers incur from providing policies to high-risk patients. If those payments stop, it’s expected that payers involved with the ACA exchanges would raise rates dramatically.
4. The governors identified waivers as another issue they want to see addressed. CNN reports the governors want more abilities to tailor ACA to their state’s individual needs.
