ACA enrollment figures fail to meet 13.8M goal — 4 key points

Questions continue to surround healthcare’s future, with ACA enrollment figures falling below last year’s total, according to Politico.

Here are four key points:

1. Politico reports many volunteers helping with the enrollment process saw a decrease in enrollment demand, compared to what they saw the year prior.

2. Last year, former President Barack Obama made public appearances and advocated for the health law, which likely led to the higher demand. The Obama administration targeted younger, healthier Americans who could offset the costs that accrued from covering sicker Americans.

3. HHS officials did not comment to Politico regarding HealthCare.gov traffic. The Obama administration set a goal of 13.8 million sign-ups for the recent enrollment period.

4. Nearly 11.5 Americans purchased coverage as of late December 2016. Officials will not release a comprehensive report on enrollment totals until March 2017.
