8M people sign up for insurance through HealthCare.gov — 5 things to know

The U.S. government signed up 8.2 million citizens for health insurance via the HealthCare.gov website, according to Reuters.

Here are five things to know:

1. Nearly 2 million people from the insurers’ prime market, those under aged 35, signed up for health insurance.

2. At this time last year, 6.4 million people signed up for insurance or were automatically enrolled.

3. The website sells subsidized individual insurance in 37 states, and millions of Americans have gained coverage via the state-based insurance exchanges that serve Washington, D.C. and the remaining 13 states.

4. The government projects 10 million people will enroll for insurance through the website and state-based exchanges by the end of 2016.

5. Those 8.2 million people who signed up or were automatically re-enrolled in a plan as of Dec. 19 will have coverage effective Jan. 1.
