Eight million children could lose insurance coverage if the government does not renew Children’s Health Insurance Program funding, the CTPost reports.

Here’s what you should know.

1. New Haven, Conn.-based Yale University conducted a study finding families would also see a steep increase in insurance cost if they lose CHIP coverage and would have to switch to an ACA regulated plan. The study examined states that use the national ACA insurance exchange.

2. CHIP funding is set to expire in September 2017. If funding is lost, states could eliminate the program completely or cut benefits.

3. Researchers found if low-income families had to move from CHIP to a private health insurance plan, it could increase out-of-pocket costs between $233 and $2,472.

4. Researchers concluded, “The future of CHIP funding is still unclear, but we’re hopeful there will be a lot of momentum to keep the program moving forward.”
