8 things to know about Ben Carson's proposed healthcare plan

On Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, MD, released a blueprint of his healthcare plan, according to Washington Examiner.

Here are eight things to know about Dr. Carson's plan.

1. In his plan, Dr. Carson would create a tax-free health savings account for every individual upon birth.

2. He would replace the Affordable Care Act, and would set up "health empowerment accounts," which people could use throughout their lives to pay for health expenses.

3. The tax-free HEAs could be transferred among family members and could be coupled with high-deductible health plans to cover costly medical bills.

4. In his plan, Dr. Carson does not outline whether the savings accounts would be mandatory or how contributions into the accounts would work.

5. Dr. Carson would gradually raise the eligibility age to 70 for Medicare over the course of three decades.

6. The plan would set up a "premium support" system, which gives seniors a set sum of capital to purchase a private health plan.

7. To reform Medicaid, Dr. Carson says he would give the HEAs to beneficiaries to allocate toward uncovered expenses and give them the option of selecting a private plan.

8. In his health plan, the government would give states a set dollar amount to help pay the premiums and contribute into the healthcare accounts.
