Pennsylvania Study Examines Participation in Patient Safety Initiatives

The Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority recently released its 2008 Annual Report, which examined participation in patient safety initiatives by healthcare facilities within the state, according to a PPSA news release.

The report examined the rate of participation for several patient safety initiatives including formal patient safety “walkarounds,” where facility leaders discuss patient safety issues with staff; having patient safety officers participate in hospital board meetings; and adopting a “just culture” that does not punish individuals for honest mistakes or for reporting safety concerns and injuries.

The study found that the majority of participants (68 percent) did not participate in patient safety walkarounds during the past year, 31 percent did not have their patient safety officers attend board meetings and 30 percent have not implemented “just culture” principles.

Despite the lack of participation by some healthcare facilities, many other facilities are participating in these initiatives. Forty-seven percent of participating organizations’ patient safety officers reported attending four or more board meetings in the past year, and 70 percent of participants reported implementing some level of “just culture” principles.
