Researchers Pair Pulse Oximeter With Mobile Phone to Improve Anesthesia Safety

The University of British Columbia's Electrical & Computer Engineering in Medicine has developed a low-cost prototype pulse oximeter device that pairs with mobile devices, according to a Mobi Health News report.

Pulse oximeter devices can help physicians detect signs of hypoxemia as a result of anesthesia, an important process because hypoxemia can result in brain damage or death if left untreated. Death rates from anesthesia are 100-1,000 times higher in the developing world compared to the developed world, according to the report.

According to the report, the device combines an FDA approved pulse oximeter sensor and module with a cell phone. The device conveys the quality and trend of physiological data over time. Researchers believe pairing pulse oximeters with mobile phones will help move pulse oximetry from hospital to non-hospital settings.
