Here’s what you should know:
1. Dr. Chalian was part of a team of 32 physicians, nurses and social workers. The team cared for 750 patients, performing 58 surgeries.
2. The team performed six procedures never before performed in Armenia.
Dr. Chalian said in a release, “We recorded everything as part of a program to ensure that Armenian physicians could continue these techniques in the future.
3. In addition to providing care, the team also created sister networks. Armenian physicians will now be able to consult with American physicians on challenging issues.
Summarizing his experience, Dr. Chalian said, “We made several inroads toward shaping the future of Armenia’s health care system — things like establishing care team protocols and checklists, the importance of ‘skin-to-skin’ newborn bonding and lactation programs. We also emphasized important social health issues like advocating protective care services for women and children.”
