The ASC field is continuing to quickly evolve, driven by consolidation trends, payer challenges, private equity influence and more.

Here are 10 statistics and trends showing how the ASC industry is evolving:

1. Sixty percent of health systems indicated they would consider a joint venture partnership with ASCs in 2024.

2. Nearly 2,000 ASCs were under partnership by a national operator in 2023 — up from approximately 1,339 centers in 2011.

3. ASC chains control about 33.5% of freestanding ASCs, with the remaining 66.5% still held by independents.

4. Between 2011 and 2024, the total number of Medicare-certified ASCs in the U.S. increased from 5,217 to 6,377.

5. Here is the market share for five major ASC operators:

  • United Surgical Partners International (Dallas): 8.1% 
  • SCA Health (Deerfield, Ill.): 5%
  • AmSurg (Nashville, Tenn.): 3.9%
  • HCA  Healthcare (Nashville, Tenn.): 2.3%
  • Surgery Partners (Brentwood, Tenn.): 2%

6. Seventy-six percent of ASCs now use an EHR system.

7. Sg2’s 2024 Impact of Change Forecast projects a 21% increase in ASC volume over the next decade, compared to a 17% rise for outpatient volumes overall.

8. From 2023 to 2024, ASCs operating with just two operating rooms reported a 22% increase in year-over-year revenue. In contrast, facilities with 15 or more ORs saw their revenue decline by 8%.

9. California, Missouri, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina are the top states for new ASCs in 2025.

10. The ASC market is reentering a phase of aggressive private equity activity as capital flow resumes and buyers target scale in strategic geographies.
