The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus received a $40 million gift to enhance research into treatment of eye diseases.
The school will use the gift to treat and potentially cure eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma, increase focus on basic science and implement artificial intelligence, according to a June 3 news release from the university.
The Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Center is the only academic eye center in Colorado and serves about 115,000 patients annually.
A portion of the funding is available for immediate use with the remainder to provide ongoing support in the future. The donor is a patient at the eye center, who chose to remain anonymous, the release said.
