Illinois eye clinic sued after patient left blind in one eye

Quantum Vision Centers, based in Swansea, Ill., is being sued for negligence after a patient allegedly lost vision in her left eye following a cataract surgery in May 2021, according to a July 31 report from the Madison-St. Clair Record.

The patient experienced discoloration in her vision and pain in her left eye after the surgery, which emergency room physicians attributed to being over medicated during the procedure. Donald Unwin, MD, the surgeon, allegedly advised the anesthesiologist to increase the levels of sedation during the procedure, which then surpassed the appropriate amount for the patient’s statistics.

In appointments following the emergency visit, the patient claimed that Dr. Unwin did not express any issues or concerns with her eye. Shortly after, on Aug. 12, 2021, the patient had gone completely blind in her left eye.

After being diagnosed with a detached retina, the patient underwent emergency surgery to restore her vision, but it was unsuccessful. She filed a lawsuit claiming the defendants demonstrated negligence by failing to provide adequate care during the procedure or inform her of the heightened risks prior to the procedure, according to the report.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
